Can we say 1 Da = 1 g/mol?

---------------------------------------------------

Dalton (Da)g/mol의 정의는 정확히 같지는 않지만,

Dalton (Da)g/mol의 숫자 값은 항상 동일하므로,

1 Da = 1 g/mol 이라 생각해도 됩니다.

---------------------------------------------------

Dalton (Da) and g/mol are always numerically equivalent.

But by definition, they're not exactly the same.

Remember that:

Da = u (unified atomic mass)

u = 1.660539040×10^-24 g/atom

1 mol = NA (Avogadro constant)

NA = 6.0224085774×10^23 atom/mol

For example, for hydrogen, when you do the math you get:

[Atomic mass for hydrogen = 1.008 Da, from the periodic table]

Mass of a mol = mass of 1 atom × number of atoms in 1 mol

= (1.008 Da) × (6.0224085774×10^23 atom/mol)

= 1.008 × (1.660539040×10^-24 g/atom) × (6.0224085774×10^23 atom/mol)

= 1.008 g/mol

---> equal to 1.008 Da

So, although they are not the same conceptually, you can in practice use them as equivalents.
