An unknown metal (M) was found not to react with either water or steam, but its reactivity with aqueous acid was not investigated.

When a 1.000 g sample of the metal was burned in oxygen and the resulting metal oxide converted to a metal sulfide, 1.504 g of sulfide was obtained.

What is the identity of the metal?

금속을 M, 금속 황화물을 MS 라 두면,

( M의 몰질량 = x g/mol, MS의 몰질량 = y g/mol )

 

(1.000 g M) (1 mol M / x g M) (1 mol MS / 1 mol M) (y g MS / 1 mol MS)

= 1.504 g MS

 

(1.000) (1 / x) (1 / 1) (y) = 1.504

 

y / x = 1.504

 

y = 1.504x ... ①

 

 

 

S의 몰질량 = 32 g/mol 이므로,

y = x + 32 ... ②

1.504x = x + 32

 

0.504x = 32

 

x = 32 / 0.504 = 63.49

 

 

 

Cu의 몰질량 = 63.55 g/mol 이므로,

x는 Cu.

금속 황화물은 CuS.
