where ATP is adenosine triphosphate, ADP is adenosine diphosphate, and Pi is inorganic phosphate which is cleaved from the ATP molecule according to the reaction ATP ADP + Pi, which releases from energy of about 30.5 kJ/mol; this biochemical energy is used to drive the reaction.
