히드록실기(–OH기)가 연결된 탄소에 직접 붙어있는 알킬기(R–)의 수에 따라,

1개면, 1차 알코올 (primary alcohol)

2개면, 2차 알코올 (secondary alcohol)

3개면, 3차 알코올 (tertiary alcohol)

[예외] 메탄올은 1차 알코올로 간주한다.

There is an exception to this.

Methanol, CH3OH, is counted as a primary alcohol

even though there are no alkyl groups

attached to the carbon with the –OH group on it.
